Randy Covitz served as a sportswriter and editor for The Kansas City Star from 1981 to 2015. He won numerous national and regional awards for his coverage of the Kansas City Chiefs, NFL, Kansas City Royals and professional soccer. He covered 19 Super Bowls, seven Daytona 500s—and the World Series, World Cup soccer, U.S. Open Golf, the Indianapolis 500 and the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Final Fours. A graduate of the University of Missouri, he received the 2011 Journalist of the Year Award from the Kansas City Sports Commission. This is his first Strong of Heart profile.
